Classes include a “skill building” series for beginners, a program called “Turn and Talk” for those who want to address a specific area of interest or who need help with one of their projects, and topics identified by the membership as areas of interest. Examples of past classes include.
- How to turn a tool handle,
- How to embellish your turning projects,
- How to make a holiday gnome,
- How to make a ladle, and
- How to turn a bowl for the “Beads of Courage” charity event.
Other classes include: How to turn with a Skew, Beads of Courage and Piercing classes are scheduled.

Mickey Kundrat
The AWA Board in August 2024 approved the purchase of six new lathes for the Kundrat Learning Center. The new lathes are Record Power Herald model purchased from Turners Warehouse. Thank you Chad for all your support in making this happen! Click on picture above to see a slideshow.
The new lathes will be a substantial improvement to the learning center environment. Having an identical lathe for each turner will enable the instructors to ensure that each turner is able to follow the instruction easily and accurately.
The Kundrat Learning Center (KLC) is the education and training facility, operated by and for the benefit of the Arizona Woodturning Association’s (AWA) members.
It is a fully equipped, freestanding woodturning shop, provided through the generosity of Diane Kundrat, in memory of her husband, Mickey Kundrat.
Additionally, AWA members have met the challenge of equipping the shop in a manner that allows for a full range of learning opportunities. The shop is heated and air conditioned, has seven (7) lathes, a 14” bandsaw, a 10” table saw, a drill press, two (2) sharpening stations, and a 33-gallon air compressor. Turning tools and safety items are available for those just starting out.

LOCATION and PARKING info:
545 W Ivanhoe Ct, Gilbert, AZ
Location. Classes will be at the Kundrat Learning Center, 545 W Ivanhoe Ct, Gilbert AZ 85233 (just east of Cooper and south of Ray Road). Please note that the Center is a free-standing shop, on the grounds of a private residence so please be respectful of the local residents. Note that Ivanhoe looks a bit like an alley, so watch for the street sign.
Parking: No parking on the street (Ivanhoe), in front of the house, or the west end of the house. There is room to park up to 10 vehicles on the gravel, in front of the KLC and adjacent to the RV Garage. Please do not park in front of the door to the RV garage.
